Punjab, located in the north west of India, is one of the most prosperous states of India. The word Punjab is derived from the Persian words panj (five) and AB (waters), thus Panjāb means Five Rivers, which roughly means "Land of Five Rivers" such as Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, Chenab and Jhelum. Punjab, a state bordering Pakistan, is the heart of India’s Sikh community. Its city of Amritsar, founded in 1577 by Sikh guru Ram Das, is the site of Harmandir Sahib, the holiest Gurdwara (Sikh temple). It is called the granary of India because of huge production of food crops.Furthermore, the first mentioning of Sanskrit equivalent of ‘Punjab’ occurs in the great epic, the Mahabharata, where it is described as pancha-nada, which means ‘country of five rivers’. Well,the Mughal King Jahangir also mentions the word Panjab in ‘Tuzk-i-Janhageeri’, derived from Persian and introduced by the Turkic conquerors of India, literally means “five” (panj) “waters” (ab), i.e., the Land of Five Rivers, referring to the five rivers which go through it. It was because of this that it was made the granary of British India.

However, it is the one of the most ancient civilizations in the world with a distinguished culture.Punjabi language has its origins in the Indo-European family of languages which included Persian and Latin.It is birth place of a number of religious movements. Some of the prominent ones include Sikhism, Buddhism and many Sufi schools of Islam.

•There are numerous anniversary celebrations as well in honour of the Gurus (the 10 religious leaders of Sikhism) and various saints.

•Expressing happiness and gaiety through dance is a typical feature of such festivities, with bhangra, jhumar, and sammi being among the most popular genres.

•In addition to Sikh religious music, semi-classical Mughal forms, such as the khyal dance and the thumri, ghazal, and qawwali vocal performance genres, continue to be popular in the punjab state.

•While,many compilations of Punjabi poetry and literature are being translated throughout the world into many languages.

•One of the most important Punjabi literatures is that of the revered ‘Guru Granth Sahib’.

•The major cities that you can visit when you are in Punjab include Patiala, Ludhiana, Bathinda, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Moga, Ajitgarh and Nawanshahr.

•Sikh Religion is the most common religion embraced by the Punjabi people. We can say that 60 percent of the people living in the state are Sikh.

•The modern Indian Punjab came into existence on 31 October 1966 when Himachal Pradesh and Haryana were carved out.

•Jallianwala Bagh is situated in Amritsar, the largest city of Punjab. On 13 April 1919, Jallianwala Bagh massacre took place here under the command of Colonel Reginald Dyer in which more than 1500 people died and several got injured.

•In the 1970s and 1980s, the Khalistan movement or the Sikh Separatist movement reached its prominence. However, Operation Blue Star was conducted by the Indian Army to stop the movement in which many Sikh militants were killed and prisoned. Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale was held accountable for the launching the Sikh militancy during the 1980s. This operation led the assassination of the then Prime Minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi.
