Uttar
Pradesh is very ancient and interesting. It is recognised in the later Vedic
Age as Brahmarshi Desha or Madhya Desha. Many great sages of the Vedic times
like Bhardwaja,Gautam,yagyavalkaya, Vashishtha, Vishwamitra and Valmiki
flourished in this state. Several sacred books of the Aryans were also composed
here. Two great epics of India, Ramayana and Mahabharata, appear to have been

1.
In January 1858, Lord Canning proceeded to Allahabad and formed the North
Western Province excluding Delhi division.
2.
In 1856, Awadh was placed under the chief commissioner. The districts were
later merged with the North Western Province and began to be known as ‘North
Western Provinces and Oudh’ in 1877. The entire province came to be known as
the ‘United Provinces of Agra and Oudh’ in 1902.
3.
In April 1937, Lucknow became the capital of the province, the name of which
was further changed to United Provinces.
4.
On January 24, 1950, the then governor general of India passed the United
Provinces (alteration of name) Order 1950 renaming the then United Provinces as
Uttar Pradesh.
5.
On 9 November 2000, a new state, Uttarakhand, was carved out from the Himalayan
hill region of Uttar Pradesh.
6. Jalesar
•The
next time you see those lovely small cast bells hung around the necks of cows
in Switzerland, be sure to ask where it comes from.
•You’d
be surprised by the answer. Jalesar, a small town with a population of around
40,000 in Etah district is known for casting brass bells and exporting it
around the world.
7. Karmnasa
•This
is a river unlike any other in India. As its Hindi name suggests, it is the
only cursed river and it is believed that touching its water would ruin one’s
plans.
•There’s
hardly any development along this river. People around this river just eat dry
fruits because cooking food would require water!
8. Shahjahanpur
•Even
decades after Independence, the streets of Shahjahanpur witness a strange and
crude convention.
•On
the day of Holi, the festival of colours, people of the town parade a randomly
chosen man, almost naked and wearing a garland of shoes, while beating him with
brooms.
•Its
happens in the presence of senior district officials and even the High Court is
aware of it, but somehow it has escaped a ban.
9. Muzaffarnagar
•The
Jat-dominated district in western Uttar Pradesh has the highest per capita
income in the state.
•One
of its blocks, Shamli, is said to have the highest LIC premiums in the country.
10. The Parijat Tree
•Roughly
40 kms away from Lucknow, stands the parijat tree, which is supposed to be the
only one of its kind in the world.
•It
is known for its flower, which changes colour during the day. Legend has it
that the parijat plant was brought down from heaven by Lord Krishna for his
second wife, Satyabhama.
11. Land Of Ganga And Yamuna
•Uttar
Pradesh is the land of the Ganga Yamuna doab region.
•These
two main rivers of the state; Ganga and Yamuna flow through the state before
emptying into the Bay of Bengal.
12. The United Kingdom Is Not Bigger Than Uttar Pradesh
•The
area of the United Kingdom is equalled to that of Uttar Pradesh.
•The
area of the U.K. is 242,495 square km and the area of U.P. is 243,290 square km
(slightly bigger than the U.K.). It is the 4th largest state of India as per
area.
13. Rich In Flora & Fauna
•Forests
account for 12.8% of the total land of Uttar Pradesh. In the central region of
the state, there are some forests of silver fir, spruce, deodar, chir, and
oak.
•On
the foothills of the Himalaya, and in the Terai region there grows the sal and
gigantic haldu.
•Well,along
the river courses, the Shisham grows in abundance. The forests near the Vindhya
mountain range, there grows dhak, teak, mahua, salai, chironji and tendu. Uttar
Pradesh is also rich in Fauna.
•A
variety of fauna is found here including Tigers, Leopards, Sloth Bears, Stag,
Wild Bears, Sambhars, Chital, Jackals, Jungle cats, Porcupines, Crocodile,
Gharial, Hares, Squirrels, Monitor Lizards, Foxes, etc.
•The
common birds include crow, dove, pigeon, black partridge, jungle fowl, house
sparrow, peafowl, blue jay, parakeet, kite, Sarus crane, mynah, quail, bulbul,
kingfisher, and woodpecker.
•Whereas,Stag
is the state animal and Sarcus crane is the state bird of Uttar Pradesh.
14. National Park & Wildlife Sanctuaries
•Dudhwa
National Park, Lakhimpur Kheri is the only national park in the state.
•There
are several tiger reserves and wildlife sanctuaries in the state such as
Bakhira wildlife sanctuary, Pilibhit Tiger Reserve, Parvati Arga Bird
Sanctuary, Gonda, Saman Sanctuary, Mainpuri, etc.
15. Unique Dance & Music
•Uttar
Pradesh is famous and known for its unique culture. It has a variety of dances,
festivals, gatherings, music, drama, cinema, etc.
•Kathak
is a classical dance which originated in the state.
•Folk
music called ‘rasiya’ which is very popular in Braj.
•Nautanki
is the folk operatic theatre performance form of the state.
